Peter Criss: Finishing Upcoming Autobiography; Video Report

According to an Artisan News Report, Peter Criss is putting the "finishing touches" on his upcoming book, tentatively titled "Make-up To Break-up," and working on his new "kick-ass rock" album. View a video news report below.

"You'll enjoy it, it's about my life," said Criss regarding his book. "Of course, it's about drugs, sex and rock and roll. But it's about my parents, my growing up. Getting through Brooklyn. Going through gangs. Getting through drugs, getting out of them. Getting through cancer. I'm four years free cancer now ... I'm doing great."

Aerosmith: "it's A Lot More Like An Early Aerosmith Record", Says Joe Perry On The New Studio Album

In a brand new interview with the QMI Agency, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for the band's long-awaited new album, which is tentatively due later this year.

When asked about the sound of Aerosmith's new material, Perry said, "It definitely has a feel like some of the early stuff. We've tried to bring that back. People are always asking for something that sounds like the old stuff, but you can't rewrite 'Mama Kin' or 'Same Old Song And Dance'. All you can do is go in and start from the same place you started when you made those records. So we just went in with (producer) Jack Douglas and we all worked on the record. There's a song or two that the band helped write, and Tom (Hamilton, bass) wrote and Brad (Whitford, guitar) has a track on there. So from that point of view, it's a lot more like an early Aerosmith record. We were all in the room when we were pulling these songs together and recording them. Every way that we used to make our records, that's what we did to get this to where it is. Right down to what we're doing now, which is going over the tracks and bringing them up to speed. Steven is finishing up the lyrics and we're just going to put the finishing touches on it."

During a recent interview, Steven Tyler stated about the new Aerosmith album, "All of it's been written, but I gotta lay lyrics on it and I haven't had a lot of time," he said. "But what I've listened to so far just knocked me out. I know a good song, I know what's gonna get played on the radio, I'm not that pretentious to say I think we've got hits, but I think we've got something, and that's all that matters."

The band has been working with producer Jack Douglas, who collaborated with them on classic early albums like "Toys In The Attic"and "Rocks".

Joe Perry recently wrote on Twitter, "People have said when we play the rough tracks it sounds like it's from the '70s but for me, it's too early to tell."

Samples from all the songs on "A Different Kind of Truth" is made available on YouTube. You can now listen to snippets from all the songs in the clip bleow.

"A Different Kind of Truth" isn’t new at all - several tracks are reworked versions of tunes unearthed from the Van Halen archives

Some fans may think of it as a cop-out of sorts, a band relying on its former magic when faced with the challenge of writing new material and having trouble delivering. Singer Daid Lee Roth, however, sees it more as a collaboration with the past, a way of connecting the current band with the creative juices that originally inspired them.

Van Halen: "China Town", "Bullethead"; New Samples Available

Two new samples from "A Different Kind of Truth" is available:

China Town” is the 5th song to surface so far from the record, the band’s first with David Lee Roth in 28 years; it’s due February 7th.

The track kicks off with an Eddie solo that leads into an all-out blistering rocker, as the band works at breakneck speed behind Roth.

Bullethead” is a heavy riff rocker and, like some of the other tunes on the project, is a song with a VH past.

While an old demo/studio version has never appeared, the unreleased original was performed on New Year’s Eve 1978 at The Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA.

According to the Van Halen Encyclopedia,Bullethead” was written in one day in 1977 in the group’s rehearsal space – the basement of David Lee Roth's parents' home – the same day the band wrote Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

Van Halen: David Lee Roth Talks "A Different Kind of Truth"; "Bullethead" Sample

Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times spoke to Van Halen singer David Lee Roth and producer John Shanks about the making of the the band's new album, "A Different Kind Of Truth", which will arrive on February 7th.
On going back and excavating pieces of unrecorded songs, lyrics from old notebooks and half-pursued concepts to build the new Van Halen album:
Roth: "It's material that Eddie [Van Halen, guitar] and I generated, literally, in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Usually fellas in our weight division will kind of gamely - or ironically, wink, wink - try to hail back to it [but] keep a safe, mature distance from it."
On sifting through archival material with Eddie Van Halen, looking for the nuggets that could be mined for the new Van Halen album:
Shanks: "Some of it was recorded in Dave's basement when these guys were kids, and, sitting there next to Eddie, it was pretty cool just to go through that journey. And then when the sessions started just seeing how Eddie and Alex play together - there's such a synchronicity in their feel and rhythm and their playing. There were times, honestly, I was just moved by it, not just as a musician but as a human being. The nuances of the way they communicate is staggering."
On the state of Eddie Van Halen, a rehab veteran who has also lost a third of his tongue to cancer and undergone hip replacement:
Roth: "He's doing really well. He's lucid, he's sober, he's playing. You know, I don't know if Ed has ever felt good. There's a thin line between rage and great work. He really never enjoyed his fame or success, and that might be part of what compels him."
On the magical legacy of Van Halen and the urgent need to live up to it with the new album and tour:

Roth: "Are there second chances? I don't know, Mr. Faulkner, I'm tending to agree with you: No. We've managed to stretch our adolescence like a Chiclet to the moon and maintained the respectful dignities along the way that got us on that turnpike up in the first place. We love what we do for a living. Even in our wildest, most beer-soaked days we never missed rehearsal."

Europe: "Bag of Bones"; New Album Out In April

Swedish hard rockers Europe have set "Bag Of Bones" as the title of their ninth studio album, tentatively due in April. The CD is being produced by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion and Journey, among others.

Regarding the new CD title, Europe drummer Ian Haugland said, "It's not [called 'Bag Of Bones'] because we all have lost tons of weight or found a new interest in archeology or dogs... It's just because it sounds fuckin' cool!"

In a July 2011 press release, Europe singer Joey Tempest stated about the band's new CD, "We still feel we have one hell of a rock record to make. Kevin's the man for the job. We love his work with Bonamassa, Black Country Communion , and Black Stone Cherry. He's the real deal. We're ready to do some serious damage."

Last year, Europe met up with Shirley in Stockholm to discuss the direction of the next album. Based on reactions from the fans and media, Europe's 2009 album, "Last Look At Eden", proved to be the band's most important record since "The Final Countdown". "I've been a big fan of Europe's work for many years," said Shirley. "The band is influential and highly underrated. I can't wait to make the upcoming album their most explosive to date."

The new material suggests a more straightforward rock approach evident in "Doghouse" - a new song Europe performed on their most recent U.K. tour (see video below). The song is also featured on Europe's"Europe: Live at Shepherd's Bush" DVD, released in August 2011 via earMUSIC CDs and DVDs.

Aerosmith: "The Story of Aerosmith"; Complete 85 Min Film

"The Story of Aerosmith" was first aired in 2002 (VH1). This 85 minute documentary tell the tale of America`s best selling rock groups of all time!

Legends. Icons. Idols. These are the words used to describe those rare bands that have been adored for a lifetime and immortalized as distinct creators of rock and roll. But what these reverent words are missing is the notion of now. How do you reconcile a generation-spanning word like icon with the quick beat of the present? Aerosmith does it. The band members are legends, icons and idols, dynamic in the present; as cool and innovative now as they were thirty years ago. They are a phenomenon, a force of nature, trail-blazing, unstoppable, showing no signs of slowing down.Unique even among the select handful of rock bands who are still active after their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Aerosmith has sold over 100 million albums. Read the full bio here.

AC/DC: To Begin Working On New Studio Album This Year, Says Brian Johnson

AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson hopes the band will return to the studio later this year to begin work on the follow-up to the hugely successful 2008 album "Black Ice".

During an appearance on a recent edition of "The Cowhead Show", the American radio program hosted by Mike "Cowhead" Calta,Johnson revealed that health issues were affecting one of his bandmates, which may have put new album plans temporarily on hold. "One of the boys is a little sick and I can't say anything, but he's getting better," Brian said. "He's doing wonderful. Full recovery fully expected."

The singer added, "It's a wonderful thing when we get in a room. Whenever the boys get back together, I get all excited. The boys, after a while, pick the guitars up, Phil will make his way to the drums, Cliff will pull his bass out and then all of a sudden this noise comes out and I sit there with just this big old grin on my face."

John Sykes Departs Mike Portnoy Project; To Be Replaced By Richie Kotzen

Former Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes has pulled out of his planned collaboration with ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. He will be replaced by Richie Kotzen.

MelodicRock.com reports that no official reason has been given for Sykes’ departure, but it is understood that a new guitarist will be brought in to the project, along with a yet-to-be-named bass player.

Portnoy isn’t exactly looking for work at the moment. In addition to his current band Adrenaline Mob, the drummer also is working with guitarist Steve Morse, multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse of Spock’s Beard, Dixie Dregs bass player Dave LaRue and vocalist Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev, Endochine) in a new band called Flying Colors. An album is currently in the recording stage, and is due on March 27th.

“This album has bits and pieces of what you’d expect from each of us,” Portnoy said. “The sum of all its parts led to brand new, unchartered territory for everyone involved.”

Although Portnoy and Sykes demoed a dozen or so songs at a Los Angeles studio last year, their vastly different work ethics and conflicting schedules were solely to blame for the dissolution of their collaboration. Portnoy explained on Twitter, "Sad but true... I tried my best to make it work... Me and [Billy Sheehan] couldn't wait around any longer... [Billy] and I are moving on and have already begun work with another guitarist/vocalist, keeping the original 'power trio' concept."

Portnoy and Sheehan were joined by guitarist Tony Macalpine and keyboardist Derek Sherinian for an appearance at the Sabian Live event on Friday, January 20th at the Sheraton Park Hotel (next to the Hilton) in Anaheim, California as part of the the 2012 NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show. Portnoy, Sheehan,Macalpine and Sherinian also performed together on January 14th at the twenty-third annual Guitar Center's Drum-Off, the nationwide search for the next great undiscovered drummer, at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, Califo
rnia.

Thin Lizzy: "Fighting", "Nightlife" Given Deluxe Treatment

Universal Music have announced that the next two Thin Lizzy Deluxe Editions will be for "Fighting" and "Nightlife". Due out March on 12th in the UK, the band says "they'll be packed with some great bonus material, now that Scott (Gorham) has selected and approved everything we can confirm that the releases will be double albums with bonus demos, outtakes, rarities and some great unreleased songs."

A press release regarding both albums reads as follows:

"Nightlife" was the fourth studio album from Thin Lizzy, released in 1974.This was the first album to be recorded by Mercury and was to mark the start of their classic era featuring Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. The opening track 'She Knows' and the upbeat 'Showdown' are the high-water marks of this album. Having said this, there are some moments of tough rock & roll seen through 'It's Only Money' and 'Sha-la-la', which both act as a perfect showcase for Gorham and Robertson. 'Nightlife' has a more soulful sound than earlier Thin Lizzy records and show Phil Lynott's increasing growth as a songwriter.

"Nightlife" tracklisting:

Disc One
'She Knows'
'Night Life'
'It's Only Money'
'Still In Love With You'

'Showdown'

'Still In Love With You' (Unreleased Alternate Take)

"Fighting" was the fifth studio album, released in 1975. Thin Lizzy were to finally create an identifiable sound drawn from hard rock, folk, pop and rhythm and blues. Fighting was to make a clear break away from the subdued nature of Nightlife, thus the lyrics 'fighting my way back' on the title track seem hard to not interpret. Fighting is tense, vicious rock and roll album and marked the sound of the band really coming into their own. It's hard not to be enthralled at their interplay especially when they were combined with Phil Lynott. Whether he's writing hard-charging rockers like 'Wild One', and 'For Those Who Love to Live' or combining both on 'Freedom Song', his songs manage to be both mythic and ordinary. This is testament to the strength of this incarnation of Thin Lizzy, who truly began their classic era with this dynamic LP.

"Fighting" tracklisting:

Disc One
'Rosalie'
'For Those Who Love To Live'
'Suicide'
'Wild One'

Deep Purple are very excited by the prospect of making a new and significant album. To that end, they have decided to extend their writing and recording period through the summer of 2012.

Commented Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan: "We know we will disappoint some of our fans this summer. However, we look forward very much to our autumn/winter tour and continuing our worldwide tour with our new album in 2013."

Durung a 2011 interview with U.K.'s Express & Star, Gillan was asked when fans might be able to expect Purple's follow-up to 2005's"Rapture Of The Deep" album.

"The fact is that we've been touring flat out," said Gillan. "We did 48 countries last year. We're getting so much off on that we just don't feel the drive at the moment for writing."
Gillan did reveal, though, that the band convened for a mini writing session earlier in the year.
"We were in Spain for a little while and we had a week off," he said. "We spent most of the time in the bar, to be honest with you. It was a good session, but nothing absolutely dynamic came out of it.

"I think to get some progress as far as an album's concerned you've got to have a target, you've got to work to a date, and that gives you pressure. If you've got the pressure, you get stuff done. We don't have a plan, to be honest.

"Things have always been chaos, certainly since I joined, and we've never been able to plan anything. If we'd been able to make plans, we'd probably have retired by now!"

"People like to do stuff that they're good at, that they enjoy, that they get something out of. So while it's fun and we're all getting older and bits are dropping off here and there, it's still great. I think there probably will be another album.

"And because we're not doing an album (right now) doesn't mean I don't write every day. It's a day off today and for me it's a full day at the office. This morning is interviews and this afternoon I've got two or three interesting pieces I'm working on at the moment. I write every day and so when I do come round to making an album there's never a shortage of what I call color material."

Deep Purple's 18th studio album, "Rapture of the Deep", was released in November 2005. It was the fourth studio CD from Deep Purple since guitarist Steve Morse joined the band in 1994. It was also the second album to feature veteran keyboardist Don Airey.
"Rapture of the Deep" was produced by Mike Bradford, who also worked on the band's previous release, 2003's "Bananas".

Megadeth: Another Time, A Different Place; New Photo Book Due In March

On March 13th, MTV Press and author Bill Hale is releasing a new book called "MEGADETH: Another Time, A Different Place" which gives the audience a front-row seat into the early days and meteoric rise of this young band who would become one of the most influential groups of all time and, with Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica, consistently touted among the best thrash metal bands ever to cross the stage.

This is the first Megadeth photography book and only the second book documenting their rise to rock glory, including rare, never-before-seen photographs representing a small but crucial period of time in their career. Hale’s photographs, from intimate backstage photographs to screaming, kinetic live shots, are the images of a young band prepared to take on the world.

Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine writes in the foreword: “The ‘work’ that you hold in your hands now is the work of a friend, who is also a ‘photo-grrrrrrr-apher,’ and who has captured the very essence of my career: hungry, gritty, hard, cold, impersonal, personal, and very personal. Also, the sensitive unseen side of me, which was somewhat of an anomaly with the public and left me an enigma to my peers."

We are going to be doing the biggest heavy metal festival in the world called Wacken. People come from all over the world to see this show. We are really happening right now and we feel the energy.
