Black Sabbath: Geezer Butler Talks New Album, Touring In New Video Interview

Frankie DiVita, radio personality at Southern California's 96.7 KCAL Rocks, conducted an interview with Geezer Butler at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below. A few excerpts from the chat follow.

On Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi's cancer treatment:

Butler: "Tony's responding really well. He's been having his treatment now for 14 months, and he's really responding well to it. So he'll be alright. You can never stop Tony."

On the incident at Ozzy Osbourne's home in Beverly Hills earlier this month which resulted in Ozzy burning his hand:

Butler: "He's doing alright. He burnt his hand when he was putting the fire out. He's got it in a plaster cast."

On Black Sabbath 's new album title, "13":

Butler: "Well, it was sort of a temporary name, that we had something to refer to the album as, and I think it kind of stuck. But I don't know if that's gonna be the final title or not. [It was named partly because it's coming out in the year 2013] and originally, we were gonna put 13 tracks on the album. We ended up doing 16 tracks, so I'm not sure what's gonna on the album and what isn't."

On the recording process for "13":

Butler: "This is the first time we've done an album together sober; none of us have been drinking or doing drugs or anything, so it's been more professional in that way. And we've stuck to a schedule every day. We'd go in at one o'clock and finish at six, just to keep everything fresh. Five hours a day - that's it."

On the inspiration for the new Black Sabbath  album:

Butler: "It's sort of got the feel of the first three albums - back to the basic rawness. And the lyrics are very… They're just about life…. Life and death and doom and everything else. You get Prozac with every album."

On Black Sabbath 's touring plans:

Butler: "We start in New Zealand and Australia in April, and then we do Japan. Then we do album promotion in June and then USA in July and August. Then South America and then Europe … [The USA trek] will be strictly [a] Black Sabbath  [tour and not an Ozzfest run]."

On having Rage Against The Machine's Brad Wilk play on the new album:

Butler: "That was Rick Rubin's idea, 'cause he wanted to have… He didn't want a typical heavy metal drummer on the album, 'cause it's not really a heavy metal album; it's more of a rock… heavy rock. And Rick Rubinsuggested having Brad, 'cause he's more in the vein of Bill Ward. So we jammed with him and he sounded great with the stuff, so we went with that … It's sort of back to the way we used to be in the '70s; that's his feel - sort of a jazzy, bluesy feel to him, and that's the way the music is now. It was great working with him."

On who the touring drummer will be:

Butler: "We haven't decided yet."

Def Leppard: "Pyromania" 30th Anniversary; Full Ultimate Albums Documentary

The group’s first two albums – "High ‘n’ Dry" and 1979’s debut, "On Through the Night" – barely cracked the Top 40 and just missed the Top 50, respectively. "Pyromania"’s hit singles sent the album all the way to No. 2 (it’s since sold more than 10 million copies). The three big singles all reached the Top 40, with another four tracks logging some serious airplay on rock radio stations. Mission accomplished. Happy 30th anniversary!

"Bon Scott - The Legend of AC/DC" ; New Movie In The Making

Rock and roll "history" was made on January 14 as filmmaker J.R. Getches shot the first- ever dramatic portrayal footage of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, starring U.S. actor/singer Rob Liotti, in Charleston, South Carolina. This initial scene will serve as a teaser film and prelude to the upcoming trailer now greenlit and in pre-production. "Bon Scott - The Legend of AC/DC" was originally reported upon in August of 2012 and garnered viral worldwide attention.

Russell Cotter of High Voltage Productions Pty. and an Australian said: "The Bon Scott movie has got legs! Rob has worked tirelessly to get the movie off the ground and it has traction.

"More than 30 years after the death of AC/DC's legendary frontman, Rob has promoted the legacy of Bon Scott, the man, and has been able to pull together the story, the people, and the logistics of what will soon become a landmark movie. Fans around the world will finally get to see what they have long waited for."

A confidential meeting was held in mid-November 2012 to solidify commencement of filming and involved key staff as well as key principal role actors. Also noteworthy is the fact that an agreement has been reached with Charleston Sound Studio, LLC in neighboring Mount Pleasant, South Carolina where the trailer's theme song will be recorded. Owner and chief engineer Jeff Hodges has been tasked with capturing the all-important track. The studio has been utilized by stars such as multi-platinum artist Darius Rucker and noted Nashville producer Frank Rogers.

While there has been much speculation over the casting of roles within the project, radio interviews with the film's star (both in Australia and the United States) have given indication that some preliminary casting has been accomplished for the trailer. It has been learned that besides the principal role Liotti holds as Bon Scott, the roles of Malcolm Young, Angus Young, Mark Evans, Phil Rudd and Margaret "Silver" Smith have been cast thus far. In preparation for shooting, the film's star took on a serious physical regimen dropping some 40 lbs. in preparation for the role.

Director J.R. Getches added: "The story of Bon Scott is a classical tragedy. He travelled across the world, made his mark, and then died too young. He was a misfit who found his place in rock music and became immortal pursuing his dream. This is a story worth telling."

The associate production company High Voltage Productions Pty. is seeking an independent production house and is said to be waiting for the right fit and vision. But they have pledged that the film's trailer will serve as a vehicle for fundraising and an instrument to give visual perpetuity to the investment interests at-large, as well as the public.

Jon Lord: "Sarabande" To Be Issued In Spring 2013

"Sarabande" is the latest of Jon Lord's works to have gone through a complete check up.

The new full score of "Sarabande" in Lord’s revised 2010 edition for group and orchestra is a milestone in Hal Leonard‘s and EMI Music‘s upcoming Jon Lord Edition. Deep Purple: "Slaves And Masters"; Remaster Out In February

On February 5th, Friday Music are releasing the Deluxe Edition of Deep Purple's "Slaves And Masters", the only album featuring former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner. Now remastered, the album features two rare bonus tracks; "Slow Down Sister" (B side of "Love Conquers All" 12” and 45) and the hard to find 45 edit of "Love Conquers All", as well as including rare RCA label memorabilia.

A press release reads:

"Featuring the Mark V line up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, the late Jon Lord, Roger Glover and new addition hard rocker Joe Lynn Turner, Slaves And Masters was a nice way to kick in a new decade with this one time configuration. Most notably hard rocking tracks like 'Fire In The Basement', 'King Of Dreams' and the international hit power ballad 'Love Conquers All' helped make this a much played album at rock radio from day one of its release. Even through all their well-documented changes over the years, Deep Purple as reigning kings of hard rock and heavy metal shined through on this album. It’s easy to hear why... the familiarity of the band was still there with its guitar shredding maestro Ritchie Blackmore, the powerful drum sound of Ian Paice, Jon Lord’s iconic keyboard work, Roger Glover’s slammin’ bass, and Joe Lynn Turner’s hard rockin’ vocals, Slaves And Masters was a winning affair."

"Slaves And Masters" tracklisting:

King Of Dreams
The Cut Runs Deep
Fire In The Basement
Truth Hurts
Breakfast In Bed
Love Conquers All
Fortuneteller
Too Much Is Not Enough
Wicked Ways
Slow Down Sister *
Love Conquers All (Single Edit) *
(* Bonus Track)
